Only 7 percent engineering graduates from Odisha are employable: What's wrong with Odisha's engineers?

Why many engineering graduates from Odisha's engineering colleges wait up to 3 years to find job? What can happen when such a large population of youth do not get jobs?
2 answers
There are many engineering colleges in Odisha where students are taking admission only to collect their degree despite not being skilled enough to be a productive part of the Indian economy.

While there are more than 100 engineering colleges in Odisha which are enrolling more than 50,000 students, as many as 97 percent of graduating engineers from Odisha want jobs either in software engineering or core engineering. However, only 3 percent have suitable skills to be employed in software or product market, and only 7 percent can handle core engineering tasks.

Problems with English language along with issues in computer programming make these students ineligible for employment. The difference in English and cognitive skill modules may only be a function of the input quality of the students. There is a consistent trend that the maximum gap is in computer programming, followed by cognitive skills and English and least in other domain skills.

The course contents do not focus on areas which will actually help in the job industry after employment. Despite exponential changes in science and technology round the world, the syllabus is hardly ever updated. Even when new branches of engineering are added, the structure remains traditional-this simply does not work anymore!

The traditional education sector in Odisha has not evolved at the same pace as the industry. The expectations that the companies have from their candidates and the skills that engineering graduates bring in, do not match.

There are not enough quality teachers for all of these educational institutes. Unlike other parts of the world, the faculties here are not comprised of the very best of the industries who have the skills to create brilliant students and most educated engineers join teaching as a profession not because of passion, but because they have to earn a livelihood and the few good professors prefer administrative positions because of lower intellectual demands coupled with higher pay packages.

Why some private engineering colleges are growing with reputation and popularity day by day while many engineering colleges in Odisha are struggling for their existence?

Why is few engineering colleges in Odisha are famous than other engineering colleges?
1 answer
There are over 100 govt and private engineering colleges in the state of Odisha. It's an impressive number. But the sad reality is that only 30% of them will survive as the popular engineering colleges will put other engineering colleges out of prospective student and parent's mind and hence out of business. One thing for sure, a business almost always fails because of the entrepreneur and over half of business failures are directly related to managerial incompetence. Here are few of the qualities of these successful leaders that made their colleges sprout, grow, adapt, and succeed:-

  1. They have a definite purpose and a definite plan and they are always working toward an overarching goal.
  2. They surround themselves with talented peoples and employees. They know great achievement always is the result of coordination of minds working toward a definite end.
  3. They have intense self-discipline. They know they can't control others if they can't control themselves.
  4. They are persistent. They don't abandon plans at the first sign of opposition.
  5. They are creative. They always seeking new and better ways of doing things. They are always on the lookout for new ideas and new opportunities to attain the object of their labors.
  6. They are decisive. They know it's dangerous to be impulsive, but it is better to make an imperfect decision than none at all.
  7. They collect all possible facts before making judgments. They take nothing for granted without a sound reason yet they move promptly and definitely.
  8. They are enthusiastic. They know know how to transmit their drive to their team and use that energy toward a goal.
  9. They are fair. They are accessible to all their employees.
  10. They have an open mind. They know a closed mind does not inspire the confidence of his associates.
  11. They go beyond what is required of them.
  12. They are tactful.
  13. They listen more than they speak. They quickly learn as much as possible from whomever they're speaking with even from few words.
  14. They pay attention to detail. They are aware of the responsibilities and output of all their employees, but in a way that doesn't lead to micro-managing.
  15. They are determined. They bounce back from defeat with a confidence that they are now better equipped to achieve victory.
  16. They take criticism. Their bigness overlooks the smallness of criticism and they carry on always.
  17. They know when to restrain themselves.
  18. They are loyal. They know loyalty to their team and clients becomes an extension.
  19. They know when to speak frankly. They have a reputation of being trustworthy as they don't hide the truth through deceit.
  20. They understand others' motivations.
  21. They are exceptionally likable. People will give their all for a leader they love.
  22. They learn from mistakes. They learn from own mistakes as well as from others' mistakes.
  23. They recognize the achievements of others.
  24. They are optimistic.
  25. They act without being guided by emotion.

Which is better to study, a BSc or a BTech?

Is there more job opportunity in studying engineering than studying Bsc ?
1 answer
Be calm, for B.Sc. is just as good as engineering. A common misconception is BTech (engineering) is better than BSc (pure science), while a few confident students stick to BSc as their career goals and have got good jobs with higher pay. There are plenty job opportunities for a B.Sc graduate as well as an engineering graduate from Odisha.

Here are few good reasons why you should study and what you should study (you decide):-
  1. Engineering: B.Tech will give you a technical hand which is highly preferred by companies. A technical person is supposed to tackle problems with ease. The syllabus of B.Sc is vast and it is far more than B.Tech syllabus. So if you are a decent student, you will do great in engineering. If you take up B.Tech and perform very well in each semester like around 80%, you are sure to land a very good job, although depends on the college (see list of top 10 engineering colleges in Odisha you should choose to study) you are going to study. Keep in mind that if you are getting B.Tech. admission in any college in Odisha which is not good as per the placements record and faculty, and on the other hand, you have an opportunity to get admission in Utkal University or Ravenshaw University for B.Sc. it is better to do B.Sc. because B.Tech. is just a waste degree if you will not have any concept of engineering and placement after four years of B.Tech. program.
  2. B.Sc: In comparision to engineering course fee, B.Sc course fee is much cheaper. B.Sc is only 3 years where as B.Tech is a 4 year course and if you are pursuing B.Sc, you should aim for the highest level of degree possible in your field, which might take many years, but you will get a highly paid job otherwise no value.
  3. However B.Tech is a clear winner in our country as fundamental science based job opportunities are not fully developed in India.

What is a dream and why do we dream? Why our most fearful dream doesn't harm us? Are there some dreams that really happened? Do dreams give us hints about future or they just the outcome of our daily routine?

Do blind people also dream?
1 answer
Except persons with extreme psychological disorder everybody dreams and people who become blind after birth can see images in their dreams. People who are born blind do not see any images, but have dreams equally vivid involving their other senses of sound, smell, touch and emotion which is hard for a seeing person to imagine. Not only humans, our animal companions dream as well.

Our dreams come to us from our inner mind, our subconscious. Every night we experience this state of mind. The subconscious uses images from our waking life to communicate to us in analogies, in symbols. Through learning, practice and by using our wisdom, we can better understand the meaning of our own dreams and the message they are sending. e.g Here are few examples how we can interprete our dreams like:-
  • The presence of a vehicle in your dream tells you about your health. The vehicle symbolizes your body. A vehicle in your waking life is a vehicle to move your body from place to place. What vehicle moves your mind from place to place - your body! Now Pay attention to the state of the vehicle in your dream. Is it new/old? Damaged? Do you have it parked, or are you taking it somewhere? A parking lot is a place to rest your vehicle, so it symbolizes that you are taking some time for relaxation. If you're driving, you are in control of yourself. If you are driving but not able to control your vehicle, you're the one out of control! When you have a vehicle dream, take stock of your current health. Pay attention to your body and what it may be telling you.
  • Shocked after dreaming your or someone's death? Death is a new state. Dreams about death are the most important type of dream because they are the moment life reaches its fulfillment. The death dream can be interpreted like, if a person dies in your dream, that is a part of you that is changing. Take a look at who has died and look at how they died. Were they killed? Do you know who killed them? Looking at the circumstances of the death, you can decide if this change was wanted or if it felt forced upon you. Knowing who was involved can help you understand what parts of you were involved in this process.
  • Panicked after dreaming a snake? Well calm down! Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. As snakes shed their skin through sloughing, they are symbols of rebirth, transformation, immortality, and healing. The presence of a snake in your dream indicates that it is important to harness your energies. The color of the snake provides additional interpretation to your dream. e.g. dreaming of a black snake means that you should be cautious. If you see a baby black snake in your dream, it is a symbol to show that it is time for you to act better with money. If you see a black snake in the grass or in the sand, then this dream is connected to a particular person or situation that is likely to harm you in the waking life. A white snake has even a more special significance. White is the symbol of purity, good feelings, good intentions, and a clean heart. Dreaming of a white snake means a new beginning could occur for you.
  • Dreams of dirty water may signal that the unconscious mind is telling the dreamer he or she is not healthy.
  • An alien in a dream may indicate that the dreamer is experiencing difficulty adjusting to new conditions or a new environment, or that his or her personal space is being invaded.
  • Chocolate in a dream may symbolize that the dreamer feels the need to be rewarded and deserves special treatment.
  • Standing on a cliff in a dream can represent that one has a broad view of something or that the dreamer feels like he or she is living on the edge or is afraid of failure.
  • Expectant parents often have dreams about miscarriages, but this is almost always a symbol of their anxiety about the baby rather than a prediction.
  • Being naked in a dream suggests exposure of self to others, vulnerability, or feeling ashamed. Alternatively, it can also represent a desire for freedom or being unencumbered.
  • Vampires are important fixtures in folklore. Vampires appearance in dreams can represent our general fears and anxieties or can embody anxieties about our sexuality.

Here are some interesting facts researched over dreams:-
  1. Believe it or not, we are paralyzed while we dream. This is most likely to prevent our body from acting out aspects of our dreams. That is why our most fearful dreams doesn't harm our body.
  2. We only dream of what we know. Our dreams are frequently full of strangers who play out certain parts and you will be surprised to know that they are real faces of real people that we have seen during our life but may not know or remember. The evil killer in our latest dream may be the guy who pumped petrol in to our Dad's car when we were just a little kid. We have all seen hundreds of thousands of faces through our lives, so we have an endless supply of characters for our brain to utilize during our dreams.
  3. We always dream but we don't remember most of our dreams. Dreams may be forgotten because they are incoherent or because they contain repressed material that our conscious mind does not wish to remember.
  4. Not everyone dreams in colour. Some people dream exclusively in black and white.
  5. When we are snoring, we are not dreaming.
  6. We cannot read or tell time in our dreams.
  7. Our dreams are not exactly what they are about. We sometimes have the strangest of dreams - some scary, some worrisome and the rest absolutely angelic. Dreams speak in a deeply symbolic language. Our unconscious mind tries to compare our dream to something else, which is similar.
  8. Surprisingly, our dreams are more often negative than positive. The three most widely reported emotions felt during dreaming are anger, sadness and fear.
  9. Anxiety is the most common emotion that is experienced in our dreams. Don't worry, you are not the only one getting nightmares frequently.
  10. The good part is that we often control our dreams. We can manipulate, twist and turn the beginning and the ending of our dreams like it's a movie being shot in front of us.
  11. People who have smoked cigarettes for a long time and stopped smoking have much more vivid dreams due to their strong negative emotions and feeling of guilt.
  12. We can dream for about one to two hours every night and we can have four to seven different dreams every night.
  13. We can reach a stage in lucid dreaming where we feel the sensations so strongly that we can experience real orgasm. That sensation or feeling is as strong as it is in real life.
  14. Our mind interprets the external stimuli that our senses are bombarded with when we are asleep and make them a part of our dreams. This means that sometimes in our dreams we hear a sound from reality and incorporate it in a way. For example you may be dreaming that you are in a concert while your brother is playing a guitar during your sleep.
  15. Dreams are good for us as it prevents psychosis and keeps us healthy.
  16. Dreams are good for us as they recharge our creativity.
  17. There are some astounding cases where people actually dreamt about things which happened to them later, in the exact same ways they dreamed about. Some of these most famous premonition dreams are:-
    • Abraham Lincoln dreamt of his assassination
    • Many of the victims of 9/11 had dreams warning them about the catastrophe
    • Mark Twain's dream of his brother's demise
    • 19 verified precognitive dreams about the Titanic catastrophe
  18. Dreams are responsible for many of the greatest inventions of mankind. A few examples include:
    • The idea for Google - Larry Page
    • Alternating current generator - Tesla
    • DNA's double helix spiral form - James Watson
    • The sewing machine - Elias Howe
    • Periodic table - Dimitri Mendeleyev
    • Newton, Graham Bell and even some poets drew their inspiration through their dreams. How they do that is, they write their dreams down as soon as they wake up from their sleep in order to remember and work on it.
    • Friedrich August von Kekule (1829-1896), who dreamed of a snake biting its own tail discovered that certain organic compounds are closed chains or rings.
  19. Sleepwalking is a very rare and potentially dangerous sleep disorder. It is an extreme form of sleep disorder, and these people don't just act out their dreams, but go on real adventures at night.
  20. The scientific study of dreams is known as oneirology.
  21. Discovered in 1856, the planet Neptune (which is named after the Roman god of the sea) is considered the planet of dreams because, like water, dreams distort and cloud images and meaning. Additionally, water represents the depths of the unconscious and our emotional levels in dream imagery, places that our dreams take us.
